| | Sun: corona, eclipse, photosphere
The Sun is a star, no different from any star in the night sky, except that it's much nearer. Like all stars, the Sun is a ball of hot gas. 76 per cent of its mass is hydrogen and most of the rest is helium. Apparent only during a total eclipse, the Sun's outermost layer - the corona - streams out from over the visible yellow disc of the photosphere. The temperature in the rarefied gas of the corona is millions of degrees. |
